Traditional education often demands that students sit still and focus, regardless of their emotional state. At Crest, we do things differently. We ground our entire school culture in a research-backed framework: The Brain-Informed Approach.
Our core philosophy is simple: A student learns best when they are emotionally and physiologically regulated.
Understanding the Brain (The Upstairs & Downstairs Brain Theory)
To help our students navigate their emotions and learning, we explicitly teach them about the architecture of their minds using Dr. Daniel Siegel’s renowned Upstairs and Downstairs Brain Theory.
What is the Upstairs Brain?
The upstairs brain is responsible for higher-order thinking, logic, emotional regulation, and decision-making. When the upstairs brain is engaged, a student is regulated. This is the state where true, deep learning takes place.
What is the Downstairs Brain?
The downstairs brain develops first and is responsible for our basic survival instincts and strong emotions. When a child experiences stress, frustration, or fear, their downstairs brain takes over. They may react before they think, slipping into a Fight, Flight, or Freeze response. In this state, a student is dysregulated—and their brain is temporarily locked out from processing new academic concepts.

By understanding how their brains work, Crestans learn to recognize when they are trapped "downstairs." We empower them with the vocabulary and tools to shift away from purely emotional reactions, helping them regulate themselves so they can think clearly before they act.
